Below you will find information to help you learn more about Room 16.
Home/School Folders: Your child has received a (white) Valley View folder that should travel in his or her backpack from home to school and back again every day. We will use these folders to effectively communicate between home and school. In your child’s folder you will find important paperwork, classroom newsletters, school notices, homework assignments, and specific notes home. Please check your child’s folder each day and make sure it is returned to school the next day as well.
Snack: Every morning we will have a 10 minute snack in the classroom. Please send your child to school with a snack that they are able to both eat and clean up easily. Also, I would appreciate the students bringing in healthy snacks in order to provide your child with the energy needed to get through the morning. We have a water fountain in the classroom so there is no need to bring in drinks from home.
Homework: Every Monday students will receive a homework packet. The cover page will lay out the homework for the entire week, along with the current spelling list. I will also include important dates or classroom reminders on the cover sheet. The packet will go home on MONDAY and be turned in on FRIDAY. Spelling homework will be completed Monday and Thursday nights and math on Tuesday and Wednesday. I will also provide some extra fun bonus sheets on most weeks. Another essential part of the homework packet is the completion of a reading log. Student should read a minimum of 15 minutes each night and have an adult sign off that they read. Please keep the cover sheet of the homework on the packet so I can check off all assignments.
Specials Schedule: Please make sure sneakers are worn on P.E. days.
Monday: Music
Tuesday: Art
Wednesday: P.E.
Thursday: Library
Friday: P.E.
School Supplies: Valley View will provide any school supplies that are needed. Please do not send in any markers, pencils, crayons, folders, etc. with your children. If there is a special occasion where the class requires a material not provided in the school, I will reach out to families.
Birthdays: All students are invited to bring in a treat to share with the class on their birthday if they wish. Please drop me a note a day or two before telling me that your child is planning to bring in a treat so I may work it into our schedule. A short party will be given for the child at which time we will have a treat and sing “Happy Birthday.” There are 17 students in the class. If a child wants, they will be allowed to bring a treat to their first grade and kindergarten teachers, as well as, Mrs. Graner, our principal.
Modifications and Enrichment: During the first weeks of school, the second grade teachers access the students in the areas of math, reading, writing, and spelling. These initial assessments provide us with important information about your child. In addition to this, students will be informally assessed as they complete independent assignments, participate in class discussions, take part in small or large group activities, and as they interact with their peers. I will utilize all of these formal and informal assessments to make modifications that best suit your child’s needs.
In addition to this, I realize that some students may also need to be challenged. I will pre-assess the class each Friday, in the area of Spelling. Students who receive a score of 13/15 or better will have a “challenge” list for the week. Their spelling words will be listed on the weekly assignment sheet in the homework packet.
Your child will also benefit from the many different ways in which I group students throughout the day to complete classroom assignments.
